Integrated Assessment of Fish Diversity, Water Quality and Socio-economic Conditions in Bergobindopur Baor: Implications for Sustainable Aquaculture

DOI : 10.4194/AQUAST3167 Viewed : 28 - Downloaded : 18 The study assessed fish biodiversity, water quality and socio-economic conditions of fishermen, and conservation issues in Bergobindopur Baor, Chougachha Upazila, Jashore district, Bangladesh. A total of 39 fish species belonging to 9 orders and 16 families were recorded. Among them, five species silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were exotic, while the remaining species were native. Cypriniformes, particularly the family Cyprinidae, dominated the assemblage, comprising 41% of the total species, although overall species richness was lower than the national average. 16 species were identified as threatened, including 11 vulnerable, 3 critically endangered, and 2 endangered species. Water quality parameters remained within suitable limits for aquatic life. Socio-economic analysis revealed that most fishermen were middle-aged (58%), predominantly male (90%), and primarily dependent on fishing, with nuclear families being more common (83%). Fishing was mainly conducted using Kochal jal, followed by Thela jal and Dharma jal. Fish marketing involved a multi-tier channel from fishermen to aratdars, paikers, and retailers. Strengthened conservation and management measures are essential to ensure sustainable fish production and livelihoods in Bergobindopur Baor.
